How to convert more enquiries without lowering your prices

7 min read · Published 2026-09-12

Price is rarely the reason you lost it

Ask around your team where deals go quiet and price gets the blame by default. It is the easiest explanation and usually the wrong one. Most lost work is lost to silence, delay and friction rather than to a cheaper competitor.

Which is good news, because none of those cost you margin.

The first lever is speed

The business that answers first wins a disproportionate share of the work that arrives unsolicited. The customer was never price shopping. They were problem shopping, and the first business that made the problem feel handled got the job.

The second is structure

A clear path from enquiry to quote to decision. The customer knows what happens next and when. Loose, improvised sales processes make people nervous, and nervous people ask for time to think about it, which is the polite way of saying no.

Structure also means the details are captured once. Nobody enjoys explaining their situation three times to three different people in the same business.

The third is follow-up

Most quotes go unanswered rather than rejected. The work is not lost, it is parked, and the business that keeps showing up in the right way, at the right interval, gets the parked work when it becomes urgent.

A two or three message sequence on a schedule will outperform a salesperson who feels like they are nagging, because the sequence has no ego and no memory of being awkward last time.

What this looks like running

Enquiries answered at any hour by something that knows your services and prices. Details captured and sorted. Quotes going out fast. Follow-up happening automatically until there is a yes or a no.

The margin question answers itself when the same price starts converting at a better rate.

Where to look first

Pull the last month of enquiries and mark each one as won, lost or parked. The parked ones are your conversion rate, sitting there unworked. That is the list worth fixing.
